The chest is the most common and fundamental item of medieval furniture. Chests served simultaneously as both furniture and luggage, as the nobles in the Middle Ages traveled from manor to manor, chests and strongboxes would protect all their possessions, including items of clothing, weapons and armour, tableware, books, jewelry and all other valuables. At home these would be used to store the same items safely. Basically every single item of value would have had its own chest or strongbox for storage and transport. Wealthy nobles could own hundreds upon hundreds of chests, as it's documented by many wills and death-rolls.
