Soon after the conquest of Italy (7th to 11th Century) the Lombard armies begun to include contingents of town militia infantrymen like these. Later (11th Century onward) Italy saw the rise of independent cities able to fund whole armies of such urban militia, which by then had evolved into a very effective combat forcce.
